A Costly Mistake: Why Choosing the Right Tree Service Matters

A Costly Mistake: Why Choosing the Right Tree Service Matters

At Spartanburg Tree Care, we take a lot of pride in doing honest, high-quality work for every homeowner we serve. Our team believes in affordable, reliable tree removal backed by guarantees—and most importantly, by our reputation in the community.

Unfortunately, this past week we were reminded just how important it is for homeowners to be cautious about who they allow on their property.

The Job That Never Happened (For Us)

Last week, one of our team members visited a local Spartanburg home to quote a large oak tree removal. The tree was massive and positioned close to the driveway, so the job required planning, the right equipment, and a careful, experienced crew.

We provided a competitive and fair price, along with a full guarantee, and scheduled the removal for four days later. The homeowner was pleased with the quote and thankful that our team could handle it with such professionalism and care.

But just two hours after we left, the story took a troubling turn.

The Imitators

While the homeowner and his wife were still at home, two unknown men pulled up and approached the couple with confidence. They simply said, “We’re here to take care of that tree if you want us to.”

Assuming they were with Spartanburg Tree Care, the homeowner gave them payment before they even climbed up the tree—a moment of misplaced trust that unfortunately cost him more than just the check he handed over.

The couple then left for a planned shopping trip, thinking the job would be done properly while they were out.

What They Came Home To

When they returned later that afternoon, they were stunned.

The tree was haphazardly chopped down. Large limbs were left scattered, not stacked or hauled. Sawdust and bark fragments covered the lawn, and soda cans, snack wrappers, and debris were tossed carelessly around the base of the tree. Yes, they even left the bottom of the tree intact.

Even worse, in the process of removing the tree, the crew damaged the concrete driveway—leaving deep scratches from heavy limbs—and they knocked over the family’s mailbox, which now hung lopsided and broken.

The couple never got names, license plates, or company information. Just a mess and they had already paid the bill.

Lessons That Matter

This was heartbreaking for us—not just because we lost the job, but because this family was taken advantage of. The impostors not only misrepresented us, but they left a trail of damage and disrespect behind them. It's infuriating, shameful, and, sadly, not all that uncommon.

We understand the appeal of someone showing up ready to do the work “right now.” But please, don’t let urgency cost you your peace of mind. Before anyone starts cutting limbs on your property:

  • Ask for ID or credentials.
  • Verify their name.
  • Check that they’re licensed and insured.
  • Get a written agreement or estimate before any payment.

Why Trust Matters

At Spartanburg Tree Care, we do things differently. We treat every home like it’s our own—cleaning up completely, taking extra care to avoid damage, and never asking for payment until the job is done right.

This experience is a tough reminder, but we hope by sharing it, others in our community will be more aware and protected.

If you’re looking for tree removal done the right way, by a team that’s insured, trained, and truly respectful of your property, give us a call. We’ll give you clear answers, honest pricing, and a team you’ll feel good about having on your property.
